THE LIFE SKILLS CLASSROOM

At Sonoran Trails, we focus on a student-centered classroom. We strive to foster students' independence and prepare them for High School and adulthood. We provide the
students with opportunities to practice their skills in a real-life setting and give them hands-on experience that will help them throughout their continuing education and the workforce.

Curriculum Highlights

We use TeachTown and SIPPS to support students’ learning in ways that meet their individual needs. TeachTown is an interactive online program that allows students to  practice academic skills at their own pace while building independence. SIPPS is a
teacher-led reading program that helps students strengthen important reading skills like sounding out words and understanding what they read.

Math & Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, Life Skills, Structured Movement Time

Together, these programs provide a balance of technology and direct instruction to help students grow with confidence and success.

Creative & Safe Spaces for Independence

Our life skills curriculum focuses on helping students build independence in everyday activities such as communication, decision-making, self-care, and problem-solving. Lessons are taught through real-life practice, routines, and hands-on activities so students can use these skills both at school and in the community.

Daily Routine

Our day begins with a morning meeting to build community, review the schedule, and set a positive tone for learning. Students then participate in Math and ELA instruction designed to meet their individual learning needs. Built-in times for breakfast and lunch support routines and social skills. Movement time is included to help students regulate their energy and stay focused. The afternoon is dedicated to
Life Skills, where students practice independence through real-world activities, followed by a Gen-ed electives that encourage creativity, exploration, and personal interests.

Electives

Each Student in the Life Skills Program has the opportunity to take a General Education Elective with their same-age peers! Students get to take one elective each semester: PE, Art, Drama, Sci-Tech, guitar, choir, and band.

Peer Mentors

At Sonoran Trails, we are proud to offer a wonderful program where general education students can join our classroom as peer mentors through an elective course. Each period, 6–8 peer mentors work alongside our students, providing encouragement, building genuine friendships, and helping create a supportive and inclusive environment for everyone. These mentors also participate in our field trips, giving students additional opportunities to connect, socialize, and learn together both inside and outside of the classroom.

  • Peers are hand-picked by Ms. Townley
  • Peers need good grades and no behavior referrals
  • Peers need to be recommended into the program by a teacher
